How to Cut and Connect LED Strip Lights at Home


LED strip lights are a versatile and decorative lighting solution for homes — adding ambient light and a cozy atmosphere in minutes. Cutting and connecting LED strip lights at home is simple when you follow the right steps. Steps for Cutting LED Strip Lights

1Locate the Cutting Marks

Look for the small scissor symbol or a line across the strip. These marks show where it is safe to cut without damaging the circuitry.

Determine the length you need, then mark the cutting point with a pencil, aligned with a designated cutting mark.

Use scissors or a sharp utility knife along the marked line. Do not cut into the copper pads, or the circuit will be damaged.

1Prepare the Connection Points

Keep the copper pads on both strips clean and free of debris. If using connectors, align them with the pads.

For a permanent connection, solder matching copper pads together with a soldering iron — do this with the power off and with care.

Prefer no-soldering? Use solderless connectors: their metal prongs align with the copper pads, then press the connector shut.

Plug in the power supply and test the lights. If anything is wrong, unplug immediately and recheck.

5Securing the Strips

Use tape or adhesive to fix the strip in place so it will not move or loosen over time.

Safety Reminder

Always unplug the power before cutting or making connections. Never cut into the copper pads, and keep strips away from water unless they are IP65/IP67 rated.

FAQ

Can you cut LED strip lights anywhere?

No. Only cut at the marked cutting lines (usually every 2.5–10 cm). Cutting elsewhere breaks the circuit and kills that section.

Why is my LED strip not working after I cut it?
