Wrong way connect led strip light to AC220V (case)


Connecting a low-voltage LED strip light to the wrong power source is one of the most common — and most dangerous — installation mistakes. This real case study shows what happens when a DC12/24V LED strip is plugged into AC220/110V mains, and why you must always use the correct LED power supply.

Wrong Connect DC12/24V LED Strip to AC220/110V

Sometimes, when installing LED strip lights, the worker does not clearly know the input voltage of the strip. In most cases the strip is mistakenly connected to AC220/110V — and it happens within seconds: the strip is damaged.

What happens when a DC12/24V strip is connected directly to AC220/110V? Check the case photos below. This strip is DC24V but was connected to AC220V, then reconnected to the correct DC24V driver:

What the photos show

Some LEDs are completely dead, others still light up but with uneven brightness. In fact all LEDs are damaged to varying degrees — the strip can no longer be used. Looking at the chip detail, the glue around the LED chips has turned black: the high voltage made the chips release extreme heat in a second, burning the chips and scorching the surrounding glue.

Danger: not just damage — it is unsafe

A low-voltage LED strip running on AC220/110V is a shock hazard for people. Always confirm the working voltage before wiring, and never connect a strip the wrong way.

Wrong Connect DC12V LED Strip to DC24V Power Supply

Another mistake is connecting a DC12V strip to a DC24V power supply. This is also very dangerous and can sometimes catch fire. We tested this in our factory — watch the video. Never do this unless you know how to connect the LED strip light to the right power supply.

The Right Way to Connect LED Strip Light to Power Supply

Follow these basics every time you wire LED strip lights:

1Use a Low-Voltage Driver

Always run DC12/24V strips through a proper LED power supply that steps mains AC down to low voltage.

2Match the Voltage

Check the strip label — connect a 12V strip to a 12V driver, 24V to 24V. Never mix.

3Mind the Polarity

Keep positive (+) and negative (−) aligned when joining strips or wiring the driver.

4Leave Power Headroom

Choose a driver rated about 20% above the total wattage of your strips for stable, safe output.
