LED strip lights come in 5m or 10m reels, but most projects require cutting and connecting pieces to fit the space. For beginners, this can seem intimidating — but with the right tools and methods, it’s straightforward. At Lichttec, we’ve designed our strips for easy field installation. This ultra guide covers every connection method — from quick connectors to soldering — and how to properly connect your strips to a power supply.

How to Connect Two LED Strip Lights Together
Whether you’re installing under cabinets, in a shopping mall, or around a living room, you’ll often need to join multiple strip segments. There are two main approaches:
Quick Connectors
No tools needed. Clip and go. Best for DIY and indoor projects.
Solderen
Most reliable. Best for professional installs, aluminum profiles, and outdoor use.
3 Types of Quick Connectors
1. Hippo Buckle Connector

The Hippo Buckle connector is the simplest way to join two LED strips end-to-end. It has space for strip on both ends — just insert each strip and close the buckle. The metal teeth pierce the PCB and make electrical contact.
Works with both single-color and RGB strips. Also useful for connecting a strip directly to a power supply lead.
2. Solder-Free Strip Connector

Larger than the Hippo Buckle, this connector can join parallel LED strips side by side. Plastic clips hold the strips securely. Compatible with single-color, RGB, and dimmable strips.
3. Solder-Free Wire Connector

Wire connectors have clips on both ends with a flexible wire between them. Perfect for corners and unusual shapes where you don’t need light in the gap. The wire has no LEDs, so it’s purely for extending distance between lit segments.
Soldering Method (Most Reliable)

In factory and professional installations, soldering is the gold standard. Clips can fail over time due to vibration or thermal expansion, but a proper solder joint is permanent.
Soldering is required when:
- Mounting strips inside aluminium profielen (clips don’t fit)
- Outdoor or high-vibration environments
- Long-term commercial installations
- When a low-profile connection is needed
4 Key Factors When Connecting LED Strips

1. Cut at Copper Pads
Always cut along the marked copper connections (usually every 5cm or 10cm). Cutting elsewhere damages the circuit.

2. Expose Copper Pads
For soldering/wire connectors, carefully peel back the silicone coating to expose the copper pads and lettering. Not needed for Hippo connectors.
Red to red, positive to positive. For RGB strips, match R/G/B/+ labels. Reversed polarity won’t damage the strip but it won’t light up.
Use heat-shrink tubing to insulate solder joints. Indoor and outdoor heat-shrink are different — choose the right one for your environment.
How to Connect LED Strips to a Power Supply
Step 1: Calculate Total Wattage

Multiply the total strip length by the wattage per meter:
Voorbeeld: 5m × 6W/m = 30W minimum
Also check the voltage — LED strips are typically 12V or 24V. The power supply must match.
Step 2: Choose the Right Power Supply (80% Rule)

Never run a power supply at 100% load. Use only 80% of its rated capacity to prevent overheating and extend lifespan.
Voorbeeld: If your strips need 30W, choose a power supply rated for at least 37.5W (30 ÷ 0.8). Round up to the next standard size (40W or 60W).
Step 3: Choose Your Connection Method
| Methode | Beste voor | Moeilijkheidsgraad |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-in Adapter | Home use, small projects, under-cabinet | Easy |
| Hardwired to Mains | Commercial, whole-building, permanent | Medium (electrician) |
| Parallel Distribution | Long runs, multiple strips, avoiding voltage drop | Medium |

To tell you a story, yesterday, one of my customers sent us a picture with
Many LEDs can’t light up, this strip is not from our company, but other supplier.
My customer had a great headache, and asked us for help! Did you have same headache?
We are high quality led strip manufacture, please check the attached picture,
the gold wire is used to connect led chip and LED holder, Normally, our LED chip is big size, and use pure gold wire, very stable chemical properties, It won’t be affected by external influence, And the ductility of gold wire is very good, it won’t break easily. so it can ensure stable quality.
But in the market, 99% manufacture use silver wire, since silver is much cheaper than gold wire, Silver wire is 20-30RMB/g, gold wire is 400RMB/g. The chemical properties of silver are very active, when the chemical property changes, it will become black, and the ductility of silver wire is poor, it breaks easily.
We guess they use silver wire, When the led strip working, it will create heat, When led strip stop working, it will get cold, there will be phenomena of thermal expansion and contraction, and the connection silver wire is broken, so the led strip can’t work.
If you use products without stable quality, you need to replace them, the replacement cost and labor cost is far more expensive than the high quality products, right?
We have 5000lm/m, 200lm/W LED Strip; One Step led strips; Full Spectrum led strips, etc,
