LED Strip Light Quality: Good vs Low

Buying LED strip lights based on price alone can cost you more in the long run. This side-by-side comparison shows the real differences between high-quality and cheap LED strip lights — from PCB construction to LED chip quality. Learn what to check before you buy.

High quality LED strip light

Lightstec — High Quality

Low quality LED strip light

Cheap — Low Quality

1PCB Construction

Good: Double Layer 2OZ Copper PCB

Good: Double Layer 2OZ Copper PCB

Double layer copper PCB provides better heat dissipation and lower voltage drop. Ideal for professional projects and long run lengths.

Cheap: Single Layer Thin PCB

Cheap: Single Layer Thin PCB

Single layer thin PCB has higher voltage drop and poorer heat management. Typically found in low-price, disposable products.

2Power & Resistance

Good: 151R Resistance — 12.8W/m

Good: 151R Resistance — 12.8W/m

Uses 151R resistance with true 12.8W/m output. LEDs pass LM-80 testing, ensuring long lifespan and consistent brightness.

Cheap: 181R Resistance — 11.8W/m

Cheap: 181R Resistance — 11.8W/m

Uses 181R resistance, artificially lowering power to 11.8W/m. This reduces brightness and is a common cost-cutting tactic.

3Adhesive Tape

Good: Original 3M 9080A Tape

Good: Original 3M 9080A Tape

Uses genuine 3M 9080A double-sided tape with strong, long-lasting adhesion. Reliable for permanent installations.

Cheap: Generic Off-Brand Tape

Cheap: Generic Off-Brand Tape

Uses unknown brand tape that loses adhesion over time. Strips may fall off, especially in warm environments.

4LED Chip Quality

Good: 18-20lm, RA>80, Copper Holder

Good: 18-20lm, RA>80, Copper Holder

High-bin LEDs output 18-20lm each with CRI>80. Copper holder provides excellent heat dissipation for longer life.

Cheap: 13-15lm, RA<80, Iron Holder

Cheap: 13-15lm, RA<80, Iron Holder

Low-bin LEDs only 13-15lm with CRI<80. Iron holder is attracted by a magnet — poor heat dissipation means faster degradation.

Key Takeaways

  • PCB matters — Double layer copper PCB runs cooler and has less voltage drop.
  • Check real wattage — Cheap strips often underdrive LEDs to save cost.
  • 3M tape is worth it — Generic tape fails over time, causing callbacks.
  • Magnet test — If a magnet sticks to the LED holder, it's iron (low quality).
  • CRI & brightness — Quality LEDs have higher lm output and better color rendering.
