Why LED Chips Need Gold Wires for Packaging-Lightstec®

LED package wires are the tiny electrical connections that link the LED chip to external pins. If this wire fails, the LED is dead. With huge price differences in the market, understanding the four wire types helps you choose the right quality for your project.

What Are LED Package Wires?

Inside every SMD LED chip, ultra-thin bond wires connect the semiconductor die to the package electrodes. These wires carry current and must survive thermal cycling, vibration, and oxidation over the LED's lifetime. There are four main types: gold, alloy, silver, and copper.

4 Types of Bond Wires Compared

Gold Wires

Top quality for high-end packaging. Stable performance, excellent oxidation resistance. Higher price but most reliable for professional and long-life applications.

Alloy Wires

Gold wire replacement. Main component is silver (90-99%) with gold and other elements. Cheaper than gold, better weldability, but prone to oxidation.

Silver Wires

Better storage than copper (6-12 months without sealing). Soft, easy machine setup, no gas protection needed. Less tensile strength than gold but better light decay.

Lowest cost (1/3 to 1/10 of gold). High stiffness suits fine-pitch bonding. But easily oxidized, unstable bonding, requires careful process control.
