4 Ways to Identify Double vs Single Layer PCB
1. PCB Thickness
The main difference is copper thickness. Single-layer PCBs use less than 1-ounce copper. Premium double-layer PCBs use 2-ounce copper. (Some budget double-layer boards also use 1-ounce copper.)
Quick check: Thicker copper = higher current capacity & better heat dissipation.
2. Hand Feeling
Without the 3M tape, judge by touch. Double-layer PCBs feel thick, stiff, and heavy — a sign of quality. Single-layer PCBs feel thin, lightweight, and very flexible, almost flimsy.
Quick check: Heavier and stiffer = double-layer.
3. Backside Circuit
High-quality double-layer PCBs have copper traces on both front and back. Single-layer PCBs have no circuit on the backside at all.
Quick check: Flip the strip over — traces on both sides = double-layer.
4. Surface Coating
Premium double-layer PCBs are covered with a protective film on both sides — feels hard and slightly textured. Some cost-cutting factories use film on the front but oil on the back. Single-layer PCBs always use oil coating, which feels smooth and reflective under light.
Quick check: Film coating is better than oil for heat dissipation and long life.
