Surface Preparation Tips
Proper surface preparation is the #1 factor in a successful tape bond. Follow these steps:
- Clean — Wipe the surface with a 50:50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and water, wiping in one direction
- Degrease — For heavy oil or grease, first use a degreasing solvent (e.g., 3M Citrus Cleaner), then follow with IPA/water
- Abrade — For slick surfaces, lightly scuff with fine sandpaper to increase bonding area, then clean again with IPA/water
- Dry — Ensure the surface is completely dry before applying tape. Moisture kills adhesion
- Press firmly — After applying the strip, press along the entire length with firm, even pressure for 30+ seconds
- Cure — Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to reach full bond strength before stressing the installation
