Some places are not easy to wire or to access AC220V power — basements, cabinets, closets, under sinks and drawers, under cabinets, garages, camping sites and inside cars. That’s where battery power comes in. This guide shows you how to power LED strip lights with batteries.
Why Use Batteries to Power LED Strips?
Many LED lights already run on batteries — flashlights, camping lights, decorative lights and gift lights. The same idea applies to LED strips. Batteries are also great for making portable demo kits to show clients your LED strip products.

Which Battery Can I Use?
Normally, three kinds of batteries work for LED strip lights:
1.5V AA Battery
The strip is DC12V, so connect 8 AA batteries in series: 8 × 1.5V = 12V. Battery boxes are available on the market.
3.7V Rechargeable
Use 3 rechargeable cells in series: 3 × 3.7V = 11.1V. Great for camping lanterns, flashlights and portable lights.
DC12V Battery
Bigger, rechargeable, commonly seen in cars and night markets. High capacity means much longer run time than AA or 3.7V cells.
How to Connect the LED Strip to the Battery
Connect the strip’s positive wire to the battery’s positive terminal, and the negative wire to the negative terminal.
Add a switch between the strip and the battery so you can turn the lights off when not needed.
RGB Strips, Sensor Cabinet Lights & Cars
RGB Strip
Use a DC12V RGB strip: connect the RGB controller positive/negative to the battery, then the strip to the controller output.
Sensor Cabinet Light
If the cabinet light input is DC12V, wire it the same way. Use a rechargeable battery to save cost and protect the environment.
In Cars
Car batteries are DC12V rechargeable. Make sure which wire is positive and which is negative — or let a car shop connect them for you.
How Long Can the Battery Power the Strip?
With the same LED strip, a battery with higher capacity powers it for a longer time.
With the same battery, a lower-power LED strip lasts longer — just like a phone battery drains faster over time.
Batteries lose power over time and need recharging or replacing. If wiring is convenient, prefer a power supply. If you use batteries, check them every 6 months — chemicals can leak and damage the battery box.

He basically made the logo glow using a strip of rgb powered by a single small battery which he hid inside the sole of each shoe. To make it even cooler, the guy could even change the color through an app on his phone. It clicked in my head and I became really interested in how I could make that. The problem is I have absolutely 0 knowledge about lights and electricity and batteries and well.. none of that to put it simple. My very first question is if there’s any small strip of rgb attached to a battery on the market?

9V also can light up the led strip light. Just not as bright as 12V.
I want to make shiny reflection box with LED wired lights for concentration of the amount of light output with a switch. I have a deep cycle 12v battery and a 12v solar panel for day time. I need this light to play cards or other activities when PG&E has shut offs. Does it it need a current Stabilizer for flicker? I’d like about 8hrs of running time. How many LEDs at what output for light of a normal 20-40w incandescent bulb.
